Why Drainage Problems Should Never Be Ignored

Many drainage issues begin as small warning signs that are easy to overlook. A slow-draining surface, occasional water pooling or minor flooding after rain may not seem serious initially, but these problems often indicate underlying issues within your drainage systems.

When left unresolved, drainage problems can contribute to water damage, soil erosion, damaged landscaping, blocked pipes and costly property repairs. Excess stormwater can also place additional pressure on drainage infrastructure, increasing the likelihood of future failures.

Addressing drainage concerns early allows property owners to protect their assets, maintain proper drainage performance and avoid more expensive repairs in the future.

Common Drainage Problems We Solve Across Sydney

Every property is different, which means effective drainage solutions should be based on the specific challenges affecting the site. At Wilco Plumbing, we take the time to understand the problem before recommending the most appropriate solution.

Water Pooling Around Pool Areas and Outdoor Spaces

Water collecting around pool surrounds, pathways and entertaining areas is a common problem for many property owners. In addition to creating slip hazards, standing water can damage nearby landscaping and affect the usability of outdoor spaces.

One solution we frequently recommend is the installation of channel drains, sometimes referred to as trench drains. These systems are designed to capture surface runoff before it can accumulate and redirect water into existing stormwater drainage systems. Many homeowners recognise trench drains around swimming pools because they provide an effective way to manage water while maintaining the appearance and functionality of outdoor areas.

Backyard Flooding After Heavy Rain

A flooded backyard is often a sign that water is unable to move away from the property efficiently. Over time, recurring flooding can damage lawns, impact landscaping and contribute to ongoing erosion issues.

Depending on the property's conditions, backyard drainage solutions may include agg drains, subsurface drainage systems or other forms of landscape drainage designed to manage excess water below the surface. By improving the movement of stormwater across the site, these systems help reduce flooding and create more usable outdoor spaces throughout the year.

Recurring Blocked Drains and Stormwater Issues

Blocked drains, overflowing stormwater systems and slow-draining surfaces often indicate larger drainage issues occurring underground. Tree roots, debris build-up, damaged pipes and ageing drainage infrastructure can all restrict water flow and cause ongoing problems.

Using advanced CCTV inspection equipment, our drainage specialists can identify the source of the problem and recommend professional drainage solutions that address the underlying cause rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Comprehensive Drainage Services for Homes, Businesses and Strata Properties

Effective drainage requires more than simply clearing a blockage. It involves understanding how water moves across and beneath a property and ensuring that drainage systems are capable of handling changing conditions over time.

Wilco Plumbing provides a complete range of drainage services, including blocked drain clearing, drain repairs, stormwater drainage solutions, CCTV drain inspections, pipe relining, drainage investigations and preventative maintenance.

Our team works with residential properties, commercial facilities and strata complexes, delivering expert drainage solutions that are designed to provide long-term results rather than temporary fixes.

Finding the Cause Before Recommending the Solution

One of the most important aspects of professional drainage work is accurately diagnosing the source of the problem. Many drainage issues can present similar symptoms, yet require completely different solutions.

At Wilco Plumbing, we utilise modern diagnostic equipment and proven investigation techniques to assess drainage systems thoroughly before recommending repairs. This allows us to provide clear advice, avoid unnecessary work and ensure that the recommended solution is tailored to the specific conditions of the site.

By identifying the cause first, we can deliver more effective drainage solutions that provide greater long-term value for property owners.

What's Really Causing Your Blocked Drains?

Tree roots, grease build-up and damaged pipes are three of the most common causes of blocked drains, but the signs aren't always obvious. A slow-draining sink or gurgling toilet could indicate a bigger problem developing underground.

In this video, our Wilco Plumbing expert explains how CCTV drain inspections help uncover the cause of drainage problems, how high-pressure water jetting clears stubborn blockages, and when pipe relining may be a better long-term solution than excavation.

[00:00] The most common causes that we run into are one of three things. You've got blocked drains from root intrusions, grease blockages on kitchen lines, and damaged or collapsed pipes. Generally, we can tell what the blockage is caused by with a CCTV camera inspection.

[00:15] Okay, so tree roots will be an abundance of roots inside the pipe from a dislodged pipe. Grease is generally very sticky, white, big chunks, and that's generally on your kitchen lines.

[00:32] Slow-releasing drains generally mean that you have a partial obstruction in your sewer system. A blocked drain can indicate a bigger pipe problem if it's caused by a large obstruction and if you don't get on top of the problem before it gets on top of you.

[00:47] A blocked drain can lead to an emergency for multiple reasons. If you have overflowing sewer outside, it then becomes a health concern. Also, if it's overflowing from the overflow relief gully, it indicates that your whole entire main line is blocked and it needs to be rectified as soon as possible.

[01:02] So, we use CCTV cameras before clearing a drain for a few different reasons. We like to try and indicate exactly where the blockage is, so when we do put our high-pressure jet blaster in, we can determine exactly where it is and get the pressure right at the point that's needed.

[01:18] So, high-pressure water jet blasting is appropriate when you've either got blocked, smelly or gurgling drains, to clear the partial or complete full blockage.

[01:26] We know a blockage has been cleared properly because we follow it up for a secondary time with the CCTV camera to make sure that we've cleared it out appropriately.

[01:34] So, customers can expect when Wilco arrives on site to initially start with a CCTV camera inspection. Once we've found the exact cause and the location of the blockage, we then follow it up with a high-pressure water jet blaster to attempt to clear the blockage out.

[01:50] Once we've cleared the blockage out, we then further inspect with a secondary CCTV camera inspection to make sure that we've done the job correctly.

[01:59] We can identify tree roots, breaks and collapsed pipes by carrying out a CCTV camera inspection, which will visually give you an indication of what the problem is.

[02:06] So, we know a damaged pipe can be relined by carrying out a CCTV camera inspection to make sure the pipe's in suitable condition to actually reline it.

[02:16] So, pipe relining is a better method than excavation when a house is on a slab. The reason is you generally don't want to be digging up your bathrooms, your kitchen, laundries or your bedrooms. So relining the pipes from outside, going underneath the house, is much better than an excavation.

[02:38] The CCTV camera inspection shows us before relining if the pipe is actually in suitable condition and therefore if it's a better method than excavation.

[02:46] So, the repair method that we choose is determined by the CCTV camera that tells us exactly what the best outcome is for a certain situation that we're facing.

[02:58] So, a professionally installed liner through Wilco can approximately last between 50 to 100 years. It does come with a 50-year warranty guarantee, but the life expectancy is a lot more than that.

[03:07] So, we've determined if a damaged pipe can be relined by carrying out a thorough CCTV camera inspection to make sure that the cracks, breaks or intrusions haven't gotten to a certain point where it is not actually eligible for a reline.

[03:23] So, pipe relining can solve multiple pipe issues in regards to copper, galvanised steel, terracotta and also PVC.

Getting to the Root of the Problem

Clearing a blocked drain is one thing. Making sure it doesn't keep happening is another. At Wilco Plumbing, we use CCTV drain cameras to inspect the condition of your pipes, identify the location of blockages and check for underlying damage.

Once the blockage has been cleared, a follow-up camera inspection helps us confirm the results and determine whether further repairs are needed. Whether it's a simple grease blockage or a cracked pipe requiring relining, our goal is to recommend the right solution for your drainage system, not just a temporary fix.

Long-Term Drainage Solutions Instead of Temporary Fixes

Repeatedly clearing a blockage without addressing the root cause often results in the same problem returning months later. While temporary solutions may provide short-term relief, they rarely address the underlying drainage issue.

Our focus is on delivering effective drainage solutions that improve performance, reduce future maintenance requirements and help property owners avoid recurring problems. Whether this involves repairing damaged pipes, improving stormwater drainage systems or upgrading existing infrastructure, our goal is always to provide lasting results.
